Somehow, in the midst of a messy desktop, these fabulous photos from Amy of Pikaland were hiding. September is a good month to can, freeze, and tidy up the general state of my garden AND computer. So, for your viewing pleasure, the photos from Amy to go with the interview I did with her last week.
In the words of Homer Simpson ... "doh" (forgive me Amy!)
Happy Labor day everyone!

If you haven't already seen this lovely piece, I suggest that you pop over here and check it out!
By Lisa Congdon - part of our Pigmentary Portraits exhibition.
Thank you all for the nice comments from the last post. You are all wonderful.
A huge thanks too to Jan at Poppytalk for mentioning my new-ish little etsy shop - flohmarkt. I have an update of wonderful plates this next week there. More on that later...

rainbow tomatoes

rainbow tomatoes, originally uploaded by artstreamstudios.

A quick pop in to say happy Monday. Here is a spectacular shot from daughter Grace before she hopped off to college on Sunday. Of course we had to go replace her hard drive on her mac book on the way ... thank goodness for local Apple stores. It gave up the go the night before we were to leave, but they popped another one in and she was 100% by the day's end. Phew.

I will be posting as much as I can over the next two weeks, with some great new works coming into the gallery, new links and lots of fun photos from our trip too.
Just a lot on our plates right now! Squam Arts Workshop is coming up on the 10th and I have a few details to wrap up with our next exhibition too! Did you miss what we have been showing all summer? I hope not! Take a peek over here at the shop to see what we have left of "Pigmentary Portraits"... it's beautiful!
My mother has been ill as well, so perhaps there will be less posts than normal until mid month. Who knows!?
Be good everyone and keep your sunny side up!

Interview with Amy from Pikaland!

I am so thrilled to share an interview with Amy from the fabulous Pikaland today! I asked her a few questions and her answers are below. Pop over to her Flickr -- it is full of images from the artists packages she puts together and her own world: Pikaland. I participated in her July package, and was thrilled to get my very own version of that month's. So now, sit back, enjoy and do visit her site right here for a wonderful view of some of her lovely packages...

1. Tell us a little bit about your first fond memories of creating something - how old were you and where did it happen?

I remembered drawing all the time when I was young, so I can't really remember the exact moment when I created art. I mostly drew pretty girls on scraps of paper, on my schoolbooks, and sometimes even my desk. My teachers were having quite the headache because I'd rather draw than hear them speak.

2. What experience as an adult was the most significant person or turning point for your creative endeavors?

For the longest time I immersed myself into the online craft world. But I felt something was missing, and I couldn't quite figure out what it was. I just went along with it for 4 years, and during this time, I stopped drawing, mainly because I was working full-time and although I did the usual doodling, I didn't take it all too seriously.

All this changed when I entered Illustration Friday last year. The response to one of my pieces was hugely uplifting, and it stirred something in me. So much that when I came back from work, I only wanted to complete my next IF challenge, even if it took me well into the next morning. And then I discovered Keri Smith, and everything else started to reveal itself to me.

3. What materials are your favorite to work with and why?

I love charcoal and pencils. I also love the irregularities of a brush dipped into ink.

4. How did you come to the idea for creating Pickapackage and why?

It all started with Pikaland. I wanted to gather the things I find that's made by illustrators and artists into a place where I can read up on for inspiration. I find that because I am also learning to mould my style, I look to a lot of people's work to see what makes them tick, and I find that hugely cathartic. So after the site was born, I found that there were a lot of them selling their art, and because of this reason, it's so hard for people to keep up with artists and their work, and it's difficult to decide which to get. I'm starting a small shop of my own to sell my work, and I do realize that it's hard to get your things out there sometimes.

So that's how the PikaPackage Project was born. The idea behind it was a simple premise of encouraging participation into the world of affordable art. It's also a small gallery in way, where select artists get the spotlight for a month. I started it as a small endeavor, and I still can't believe the following it has right now. It's hugely encouraging when I receive notes and emails from readers, participants and buyers about how they loved their packages, and how their shops have benefitted from the exposure.

There's more things to be done, and this is just the beginning. The benefit of being small is that I can easily change and make it better for everyone easily. I am indebted by the support given to me by the participants, who believed in the project and continue to support me by giving me valuable feedback in every step of the way.

5. Are there things specific to where you live which inspire your own work?

For the moment, I would have to say no. My ideas are derived through a lot of reading done when I was young, and thus I didn't have boundaries to creating because was conjuring up images from my imagination. I was also exposed to a lot of artists online for the past few years, and that helped me shape my belief that art is universal. And because right now I don't have an inclination to be more site specific, I find that my mind works harder to create new possibilities.

6. What is your favorite desert?

Oooh. A hot-from-the-oven brownie plus a scoop of vanilla ice-cream. Mmmm.

7. What does a really great day look like to you?

A great day would be one that starts off early. I like to clear my work early so that I can have a long lunch, and some time off with a book (I'm now reading The Creative Habit by Twyla Tharp). I run in the evenings, and play with my dogs after.

P/S--about my studio:
I have a very small space at the moment (as you can see from my pictures!), but I'm going to move into my own space by the end of the year, so I'm really excited about that.

just a little late night news flash... i will admit it. i am a dish a holic.
i love kitchen goods and well, this set was just screaming my name out at the local shop.

i got it home and heard the groans of my family.... so i reluctantly listed it in my little flohmarkt shop.
go there, have fun, save me from myself!
a full service for four with the only flaw being one tiny chip in the top of the sugar bowl.
hey, maybe i can keep the little shallow dishes.....

Lisa Solomon Tyrian

Lisa Solomon Tyrian, originally uploaded by artstreamstudios.

Lest I forget to mention my thrill to return to the gallery today and see the beautiful work from Lisa and Lisa on the walls, I would be amiss.

This Tyrian piece is one of my favorites. Notice the dog? The crown? The beautiful shell? One of the many works from Pigmentary Portraits, still available here at the shop. This is the time to invest in great art. To have something real in your home which is not digital nor poster-ized. Need some time to mull it over? OK, do so, but it comes down on Sept. 4th. Need some time to pay? No problem! We have layaway. And love to do so. Just ask.
Happy weekend lovely readers. Sunshine is abundant here with my thoughts turning to the beach. What are your plans for this wonderful magical time we call summer?

Sailing back home

two in a boat, originally uploaded by artstreamstudios.

Back home again, to a sunny day in NH, (I heard there were very few whilst we were gone!) a wet garden and lots of friends and family to greet us. Our trip was picture perfect with loads of relaxing and family/friends to catch up with. I even met my buddy Kristina who flew from Rome to visit us in Muenster. Angie and Beatte came to visit too, so happiness abounded in visits from blogging buddies. Visiting our local Muenster friends was special too with loads of cake, grills and lots of prosting going on. The family love was strong too. Did I mention I was rested? And the cake! Oh my.

On to the photo above... I am posting this photo of the illustration I did for my inlaw's 50th wedding anniversary for two reasons. First you asked to see it and secondly as a response to Illustration Friday's prompt: Sail.

These two are in one boat - one sails by the stars, one by the storms.
It's sort of like life. A good life and one greatly worth celebrating. More photos and finds once I sort out the bits. Until then, you can peer at my flickr as the photos pop up. Still downloading mass quantities! (edit::edit::edit thyself)

So off we fly to Germany today... our bags are packed and ready for some fun. I hope the next weeks are wonderful to you all and that you check in from time to time to see some snaps from the other side of the pond.
Another lovely photo from Matthew Wyatt - all in the shop.

rainer :: two birds, originally uploaded by artstreamstudios.

So you asked for more of Rainer's work. Here are his two birds. We are leaving for Germany tomorrow for vacation so there is a lot to do today in preperation! I will be posting photos at my flickr and the occasional post here with what we see in Germany. What does this week hold for you?

July 25, 2008

Rainer paints, Rainer draws

But we never see it. We unearthed a few hundred drawings and sumi ink works from Rainer's past. This is the family favorite. We will embarrass him now with this post... but don't you just love this?

Matthew Wyatt - new photos

Matt has been a friend of artstream since the beginning. As an emerging artist we have seen his work grow and flourish. As well, he has had work in the gallery three times now and this time, we are just bursting with excitement as the photos hit us in that "special spot". Nostaglia, home, quiet time. The one above is but one of 12 which are going into the shop today. This one also reminds me that it is almost time for vacation - yay!

We are going to Germany next week and visiting with Rainer's family and our friends and seeing a few blog friends as well - Kristina and Angie are definite but there are a few others I would love to meet up with as well. You know who you are... Happy Friday to you all.

the words say it all, originally uploaded by artstreamstudios.

We noticed the movie sign late on Saturday night and just had to take a photo.
Read it all together.
It could be the first lines of a novel. or something like that. A sign of humor. Do you think that the kids that put the letters up did this perhaps as a subtle joke?
hee hee hee.
Rain continues here, flooding everywhere, but we are keeping happy.
Hope the sun shines over your way....

A lovely local NH artist from just down the road - Jennifer from Thirty dash 9 sent over a slew of new glass necklaces for our gallery. They are going up in the shop, but in the meantime, drop by and take a peek. Each one is printed in sepia tone with a different glass color on the front. Typewriters, scissors, flowers, birds, pencil sharpeners, knitting in progress. We love them! Here's to a wonderful week starting with a great Monday... what are your plans for the week?

Pigmentary Portraits: Opening night

Just a quick post to lead you to the photos of last night's opening. It was a great time and the show is so very much worth a road trip. Photos don't (per usual) do it justice, so just get on over here. Of course, if it's impossible, remember everything is up at the shop right here for sale. We will be taking the show down on Sept. 4th so all work will be shipped that week.

We had a nice turn out last night and a few first time meet ups for some of the guests - so a great time! Click through the photo above to see photos of the show, opening and dinner afterwards...
Thank you Lisa C and Lisa S for making the trip out East, it's been so much fun!

Latest assignment

ocean view monotype print with india ink 2008 susan schwake

Sometimes I play Illustration Friday, less now than before, yes, I miss it some weeks. But life has been a little hectic. But I love the prompt, the "assignment" nature of Ms. Penelope's site. My latest assignment, prompt if you will, will be creating a painting, collage perhaps, for my in-laws 50th wedding anniversary. The prompt is the short poem, translated from German, below. I already have an image in my head. Just have to get it to paper.

two are rowing a boat
one knows the stars
the other knows the storms
one will lead through the stars
one will lead through the storms
and at the end, the very end
the sea
in the recollection
will be blue.

Today we will be installing the exhibition - as Lisa and Lisa have landed... photos later.

Stacey Esslinger beautiful handbuilt ceramics

I thought I would post an in process photo of an in process piece of Stacey Esslinger's beautiful work. Here is a description of her work process below:

Using a variety of fabrics, textiles, and molds of knitting I texture a flat slab by pressing the fabric into the clay using a rolling pin. I then cut out patterns which I have developed by trial and error, and let the porcelain slab dry enough for handling. Using techniques similar to sewing the seams and darts are joined together creating a three dimensional form. The last step is to add rims, feet, handles, and spouts. The pieces dry slowly, are bisque fired, glazed, and then fired again. All my work is functional and food safe, and can safely be used in the microwave and dishwasher.

Off to put the gallery back into order - a new arrangement - and ready for installing the new show tomorrow with the lovely Lisa Solomon and Lisa Congdon!

Lots of fun decisions to make, new holes to drill into the pristine walls and shining up the glass to sparkle.

We have had these beautiful Deerhead Projects at our gallery for about a month now and finally, have placed them into the shop. Earlier this week Grace at design*sponge showed Jen's other work which is equally beautiful.
Her work is so beautiful, modern and full of a twist of nature, don't you think?

Good morning friends ... what a lovely weekend here! Hope yours was too. Starting off the week with an assignment from Miss Stacey's Summer School. The assignment was "a place I love to be". Well, that is the ocean for sure and there were so many gangly boys playing pong on the seaside that I decided to paint one of them.
Part of a summer series of tiny artworks/sketches even, over at my etsy shop for $15.
Off to paint the gallery now. Big week ahead here! What do you have in store this lovely summer day?

A beautiful email today dropped into my box from the emerging artist Rebecca Volynsky. Here is her mixed media piece called "Sun Stroke". Click through it to see more images of her work. She also has a nice little blog called silhouettes and an etsy shop by the same name. Rebecca hails from Providence RI and she is going to attend Boston University in the fall - (yes, she just graduated from High School!) I would say that this is one woman to watch.
Thanks Rebecca!

Lisa Congdon + Lisa Solomon (on deck)

Lisa Congdon designed the announcement card above - so beautiful!
We are thrilled to share with you a sneak peek of our next exhibition: Pigmentary Portraits with Lisa Solomon and Lisa Congdon from the Bay Area. You are all invited and we really hope to see you at the gallery on July 18th from 5-8 p.m. This is going to be a wonderful exhibit and we are so happy that they BOTH are coming out to attend the opening.
Here are their own words surrounding the exhibition:For their joint exhibition artstream in Rochester, NH, Bay Area artists Lisa Congdon and Lisa Solomon are exploring a selected palette.

In their own ways they will research and investigate the historical origins of Indigo and Cobalt blue, Indian and Ochre yellow, Verdigris and Malachite green, Vermillion and Alizarin red, Cadmium and Realgar orange, Tyrian and Mars Violet purple, Gofun Shirayuki white, and Ivory/Bone black.

Their hope is to create a portrait of each pigment - through which they may somehow reconnect with the alchemy of colors' past.

Firm believers in the idea that one's materials can only enhance and contextualize one's work, both are interested in exploring where these pigments come from and how to present their findings in a visually rich language.

Big Install ... part one

Here are four big cathead portraits from Bruce Andrew McKay in an installation at our local hospital.

*side note: Bruce made an incredibly cool commercial for Ford of Canada - check it out here *
We sold these works to our local hospital for their new 88,000 square foot addition (wing is really too small of a word for this four story improvement) . These hang in the children and womens' waiting room.
I took some quickie snapshots at the invocation this morning, but I plan on going back later this month to give a much better documentation of the large body of work which is there - I just didn't have the time to get proper shots today with the groups of people there.
Here's to a grand weekend for everyone - enjoy the delights of summer!

Fields Project - Danny Mansmith and Cathi Bouzide

Today I got a wonderful email complete with photos from the one and only Danny Mansmith. His latest work involves the midwest, corn bins and friend Cathi Bouzide. Check it out here at the site.
I love public art and I love the way this piece changes the landscape so subtly. More on other public art later today!

Scoop of life

This week has already proven to be filled with adventure and summer splendiferous-ness. Big party for 14 yr. old Chloe on Monday, packing and shipping a lot of artwork to live in new exciting places, fun little workshops with kids and adults and packing for aforementioned teen to bustle off to summer camp this weekend. Squeezing in the hanging of an inaugural show at a new off site location in town ( a new huge wing of our local hospital has opened and they put in a small gallery space which we are curating and maintaining) and some speed weeding of the garden has me looking forward to the weekend.
I finally got (after three years of waiting and saving) an electric palette for my encaustic painting. no. more. griddle. I have saved it for this weekend to fire it up. Ya - hoo! I have a body of work started in acrylic for the summer painting session and some of the works will translate into encaustic pieces.
What are the scoops about? Well, I think they represent the right number of hands I would love to have right about now in the week... and they are little vintage finds available at my little flohmarkt shop.

Summer has begun...

It is seemingly a fleeting moment here in NH but summer is well appreciated by all for months to come. Like Fredrick, in the classic children's tale by Leo Lioni we save the warm memories for the deep dark days of February.
In this spirit of remembering what is around us at all times, the above print made by the fabulous Christine over at the darling shoppe. It is $25 and the proceeds go to help her to attend Squam Art Workshops right here in NH. I love the message and the theme it comes from. Here are Christine's words about the print:
Look Up is my debut True*Stories art print, featuring an original and inspiring drawing and story by yours truly. It reads:

"we don't spend enough time looking up," he said.

"i know," i said
& pointed my head upward.

just then, i saw a balloon floating toward the sun. it was a sign.

I hope we all see the signs today...

The Flohmarkt is open!

beehive measuring cups available at flohmarkt
I needed a diversion I guess - along with a little housekeeping, destashing, decluttering... so I went and opened a little etsy shop called Flohmarkt. Flohmarkt is the German word for "flea market" and well, it seemed appropriate for my idea. I have always collected a bit of this and that and love the eclectic and decayed, along with the idea of re purposing and reusing things.
Lots more goodies to come, but there are at least 10 items there now. I hope you take a peek!

I blogged about Eve a couple of years ago when she was having an exhibition at artstream. I really love her work, her home and all that is Eve. We did a little art swap at that time and I got this beauty. It's been in our living room ever since and I truly never tire of it.

Peony and Parsley

peony and parsley, originally uploaded by artstreamstudios.

Today the white/pink/peach dandies opened up fully and well, my parsley shot through the bolt with some pretty leggy stalks. These two had to pair up for a seat at the table for dinner tonight. Our bare bones walls in the background are almost ready for paint and the wall papered wall (yes, I am going to do one focal wall in a pattern) ...
This pair really spruced up the sub-floor, the 15 year old lace table cloth from Mexico and the repainted (old silver over sage over who remembers what?) side of the road find chairs which adorn our torn to bits kitchen.
Yes, peonies have a way of making the dreariest of renovations seem miles away. And what do you think of that parsley? It's still a garnish, but a bit elevated, don't you think?
I like this evening light, the mix and well, life on a Tuesday... hoping this finds you in an equally satisfied mood!

They said they had been looking for some large art for outside their building and well,I guess I had what they wanted. It so nice to see them up and unfurled! Inside they have some of my originals and some tiny art pieces of mine amidst loads of lovely work from many artists on the coast of NH. Thanks Steve and Mike!

Felt handiwork

Daughter Chloe turned 14 this past weekend and she really wanted a new digital camera. We found just the right one for her and just as soon as she opened it and snapped a few shots, she wanted to go down to the home studio and make a felt case for it. She hasn't sewn with a machine that much, but has a new found interest as she has declared she will study fashion design. She used the little Janome Mini and wanted to "draw" like Danny Mansmith on the flap. This is what she came up with and we all think it is adorable.

Embroidery Love

The ever-effervescent-creative diva of NH, Megan Bogonovich stopped in last night for a workshop. She was sporting this fabulous blouse, which, I immediately stopped me in my tracks. When I inquired about it, she said, oh my mommy made it for me! Goodness knows I love me some fancy needlework, but this one is so purely original that she allowed me to photograph her even with details. Blimey! indeed! I love it and can't wait to hear about the dinosaur ones her mumsie is whipping up next... Talent runs, no, sprints in that family!

Angela Liguori

Book art is something special to me. There is such joy in hand binding books. Today I found a local Boston area artist Angela Liguori ... Her graphic design studio specializes in custom made invitations, business cards, hand-bound books and cotton ribbons, directly imported from Italy. She also has a collaboration going with friend Silvana Amato on limited edition books, under the imprint of Edizioni Almenodue, which translates as “Press of at least two. The book of Jumbles above caught my eye. Here is her profile statement from her etsy shop:
Born and raised in Rome, Italy, Angela Liguori first apprenticed in the book arts in a studio in Bologna, where she learned the traditional style of bookbinding while simultaneously completing a university degree in Renaissance Art History. In 1994, she relocated to the United States, accepting position at The Minnesota Center for Book Arts. She now resides in the Boston area, where she continues to work through her business Carta, inc. and teaching book arts to local institutions.

our earliest peony blossom
A slight break from the art scene to share my other passion with you... peonies. I just love everything about this flower. This morning before it gets really crazy hot, I captured the blossom overload in the back garden. Their scent is intoxicating, their color is shameless and well, with this heat we have been experiencing, they are popping open by the bouquet-full.Off to greet 15 kindergarten students from a neighborhood elementary school. They are taking a walk over to see the gallery and play with me in some clay fun!

Whew! What a whirlwind week! Lots of art making/hanging/moving/shipping this week here at artstream. This is a busy time with lots of events happening. The calm I find inside our doors though every morning when I go to work, helps a lot. Having the wonderful artwork from Heather Smith Jones, Albina McPhail, Mary O'Malley to greet me each day is an absolute joy! The color explosion from Megan's vases are a cheery reminder that spring IS here and that the modern twist of this show makes for some dreamy thoughts.
Working on a few little pieces on paper to complement my public art piece. They will be available at Nahcotta this summer and in our shop online.

Student Art Exhibition

Tonight marks my 15th year of holding twice yearly art exhibitions for my students - (both young and old!) at our fabulous library downtown. Here are two of the giant (but not the largest made) masks which they made this year. I think the two of them look like they are whistlin' Dixie.
Lots of last minute prep work for this event, so I will leave you with this thought ... If YOU made a mask, who would YOU be? Feel free to leave comments below and enjoy this perfect spring day!
