Megan Bogonovich: our new Artist in Residence

Big news! This spring and summer Megan Bogonovich will be our very own Artist in Residence! We are thrilled and so anxious for her to move in. Megan's work has graced our gallery for four years now and with her range of work (starting at 20 dollars!) and scope of artistry we couldn't be happier. It's not every day that you meet someone as nice either. Stop by in May and say hello to her!

1001 Journals at artstream

Today the weather is simply unseasonable, which, I for one will not complain about. It is meant to reach 50F so that is the perfect time to be in the studio. We can open the back door and enjoy a little sunshine and air! There are a lot of things on my plate today, so I will keep this post short. Just a note about a new little in house project which Sandy pointed me in the direction of - 1001 journals. We now have one set up at artstream in our waiting room, so do drop by and make your mark. No supplies necessary - they are all waiting for you at the journal station ...

We are thrilled this morning to welcome a new show -(as well as a new era for America!) - entitled Lasting Impressions. The show features three local, yes, I mean Rochester, NH artists: Rose Theriault, Grace Youngren and Judith Heller Cassell, and introducing porcelain work by Kristen Swanson.
You have seen a few sneak peeks of the works which were making their way to our walls and now we invite you to join us at the opening party this Friday night from 5-7 p.m.
We are so pleased to offer this exhibition of printmaking - from intaglio to woodcut processes and everything inbetween as well as a few of the actual plates which have been made into the most beautiful artworks as well. If this were not enough, Kristen's porcelain with the intricate scrafitto work is gracing the pedestals throughout the main gallery.
And for those of you who missed the last exhibition? We moved the beautiful pieces which are left to the Equinox gallery section. Hope to see you all on Friday night. Most of the work will be online at the shop too!

Stacey Esslinger beautiful handbuilt ceramics

I thought I would post an in process photo of an in process piece of Stacey Esslinger's beautiful work. Here is a description of her work process below:

Using a variety of fabrics, textiles, and molds of knitting I texture a flat slab by pressing the fabric into the clay using a rolling pin. I then cut out patterns which I have developed by trial and error, and let the porcelain slab dry enough for handling. Using techniques similar to sewing the seams and darts are joined together creating a three dimensional form. The last step is to add rims, feet, handles, and spouts. The pieces dry slowly, are bisque fired, glazed, and then fired again. All my work is functional and food safe, and can safely be used in the microwave and dishwasher.

Off to put the gallery back into order - a new arrangement - and ready for installing the new show tomorrow with the lovely Lisa Solomon and Lisa Congdon!

Big Install ... part one

Here are four big cathead portraits from Bruce Andrew McKay in an installation at our local hospital.

*side note: Bruce made an incredibly cool commercial for Ford of Canada - check it out here *
We sold these works to our local hospital for their new 88,000 square foot addition (wing is really too small of a word for this four story improvement) . These hang in the children and womens' waiting room.
I took some quickie snapshots at the invocation this morning, but I plan on going back later this month to give a much better documentation of the large body of work which is there - I just didn't have the time to get proper shots today with the groups of people there.
Here's to a grand weekend for everyone - enjoy the delights of summer!

Lisa DeJohn
stopped in this week at artstream to interview us for her guest blogging at design sponge. It is always great to see Lisa as she is not only a wonderful artist, but a truly nice person. We talked for quite awhile and she took a lot of photos - but I never imagined such a comprehensive write up as she did on us. Thank you so much Lisa!

Almost there ...

hanging, fixing, originally uploaded by artstreamstudios.

Without any further ado - here are some scenes (click through to flickr) from the last few days at artstream. There are still some goodies to make some final touches, but we are getting close to count down to tonight. Yes, snow is flying again, but it's a silly spring snow... lost from it's mother season, teasing us in the air and melting as it hits the ground.
I'll let the photos do the talking and full disclosure on the event at flickr tonight and next week in the shop and here at art esprit! Thanks to everyone who has called, emailed and dropped by, your support is wonderful!

Workin'

I've been working on a new set of collages based on fruit. Yes, Fruit. Spring can't come quickly enough for me this year and I have been incorporating some of the images from the USDA catalogs from the 1920's into my work.

They will be shown in a little upcoming show I am having at the yummy and wonderful Black Bean Cafe in Rollinsford, NH. Along with them will be some other new experiments with watercolor and ink on canvas. Will show all soon!
Stay tuned this week for another artist's podcast - this time with the witty and effervescent Darryl Berger from Canada. Thank you all for the wonderful kind remarks on Ulla's interview. She is utterly fascinating!

Whimsical vessels workshop

Better light today and a few little glimpses at the work in progress from the Saturday workshop with Megan Bogonovich. We had so much fun.
This footed egg dish and butterdish are just bone dry now and waiting for three layers of wiped on underglaze for a super magnificent texture popping color.
More workshops to come on Saturdays in April and May by Megan Bogonovich and some jewelry workshops in April and May by Makayla Brown.
