freshly blended ornament swap!

Just got a nice note from Nicole over at freshly blended and it's on again! The original format Holiday Ornament Swap is back starting Nov. 1st. Here is a photo of my second year ornaments I sent out. I love participating in this swap and this is such great news. It really gets me into the holiday spirit each year and it's just fun to get little handmade packages from others out there too.

What can artists do?

dreaming by susan schwake mixed media on panel
What can artists do? Artists can change the face of an area, inspire others for greatness, make us laugh and cry, infuse a city with economic riches, develop a new way of thinking, illustrate an era, illuminate a thought and spread the word of change. -- just sayin.

Erin Slingsby :: new work

Sunday walks

We took a walk in the woods on Sunday. It was so sunny and quiet. We found a huge shag bark hickory tree and these fallern chestnuts and a seed pod. Reminded me of walking around the woods as a child and finding chestnuts. That was enough to make it a perfect day.

Printing with Leaves and Watercolor

one of mine - as a card
one of the littles work
one of the children's work

one of my adults work
another one of mine - my favorite!
Today my adults and our preschoolers printed with leaves. The process is simple and fun and you can enjoy finding your favorite leaves outside before you start!
First - go out into the sunshine and find a leaf or two or three whose shape you admire. Then, take your watercolors and paint all of your favorite colors - fall like or not - onto a piece of paper. Let them dry.
Take some black printmaking ink and roll it out onto a smooth surface with a brayer.
Using the brayer, roll some ink onto the back of the leaf to cover the entire surface.
Flip the leaf over and press it gently onto the original watercolor painting.
These pantings can be used for cards, gift tags and wrapping paper if you wish - or just frame up your favorite and hang it on the wall.

Fall splendor

Yea! It's happening -- the fall colors are exploding. Here is an example of what you can find right in your own backyard here. It's so perfect. Stay tuned for a nice little art project based on leaves.

Rainbow connection

Somehow this week just all fell into place. Beautiful skies each morning and night with so much packed in between, lots of exciting news on the horizon, but that will have to wait. So for now, here's a scene from late yesterday. I love rainbows ... they always come when you least expect it and seem to bring luck. Do you believe in luck? I am not sure if I do, but I believe in rainbows.

Batik fun!

Three of my students wanted to make cushions from their material they had batiked, so - sew we did. They had never sewn before at all and I think they did a wonderful job. I taught them a little satin stitch too, which they each tried out before sewing up the cushion and stuffing it. Good times in class today - will show some of the others later this week, they are finishing up the batik process and finishing them as wall hangings.

New work from Megan Bogonovich canisters!

These are the beauties which are part of our new exhibition - canisters and bowls by Megan Bogonovich. Each one is one of a kind but as a group, they all coordinate beautifully. From coffee to oats to whatever you need to keep stored, these babies will hold it! The bowls are wonderfully large, for that ice cream pig-out session or serving dishes for a special party. Sturdy and machine washable, they will stand the test of time!

Fun times on Friday night

Ok, I lack in photographic skills when I am entertaining at the gallery, but dear friend Phil snapped a few which "didn't get away". It was a dreary rainy night, with loads of "weather" but we had a lot of fun and the show is off to a great start. Here are Phil's shots above. How was your weekend?

Tiny Harvest

I made some salsa this weekend and canned it. Got only five jars as the green tomatoes just refuse to turn red. Must be the colder weather slowing them down. Anyway, here are three of the jars on the sill. You can see that the trees have not all turned as yet. But they are trying to.
