Rita Vindedzis :: artist interview

Today we are going to have a little interview with artist Rita Vindedzis - so sit back and enjoy!

Her work can be found currently in our gallery and also in her own shop, blog and website.
To begin Rita says this about her work at her website:

Rita Vindedzis, a Canadian born artist, wife and devoted mother, came to realize her passion for art very early in life. The daughter of professional artists, Rita’s earliest influences began in childhood as she watched both her mother and her father bring their artistic visions to life.

Inspired by the creativity that seemed to permeate virtually every aspect of family life, Rita began to pursue her own artistic abilities through formal studies, however the true nature of her inimitable style always came naturally. Acrylic on canvas is the medium through which Rita’s landscapes come alive – a warm and inspiring combination of what she has seen, and what she would like to see in the natural world around us.

Rita paints in her studio using photographs taken during family trips, inspirational drives and walks through the countryside. Some are created purely from memory.

Big skies and open fields, a large expanse of beach, meandering streams and grazing sheep are some of her favourite themes. Each painting is a soft-focus moment in time.

Rita’s long list of gallery exhibitions, art shows, studio shows and home shows continue to garner respect for her work throughout the artistic community, and have given her both a loyal and rapidly growing following.

Her artwork has appeared in Canadian House and Home Magazine, Style at Home Magazine, Décor Magazine, on national television programs including CityLine, Design Inc. and Designer Guys, Canadian Idol, in national television commercials for Heinz Canada, and in the Kilgour Estates model home designed by Brian Gluckstein.

Rita is presently engaged in a wide range of solo, group and gallery exhibitions and her work hangs in numerous private and corporate collections.

And now - on to the interview!
1. What is your earliest memory of art making?
It was in kindergarten. Finger painting and gluing noodles onto paper were the best!

2. What is your medium of choice?
Acrylic paints. The fact that they are so quick drying and that you can mix in other media so easily appeals to me.

3. What are your greatest inspirations for your work?
I get inspired by walks and drives in the country and the beautiful city I live in. We have lots of green spaces in Toronto and the lakeshore and beaches are great. A recent trip to New York this summer has given me tons of inspiration for a new urban series. I also get inspired by color-it's everywhere. Magazines, gallery hops, travel, and my inspiration boards inspire me as well.

4. What is playing in rotation these days while you are working?
Radiohead, Amy Winehouse, Duffy, Coldplay, Simply Red, Radio Nigel, or one of the "alternative" playlists made by my 17 year old son.

5. What is a good art making day look like for you?
After my husband leaves for his office and my son heads out for school, I'll get my workout done and grab a shower and some breakfast. Then I get right to work in my studio and paint for a few hours. I'll stop and break for lunch and sometimes a quick trip out to my local Starbucks. Then it's back to my studio and a few more hours of painting. A really good art day is when I can can get in at least 6 hours of actual painting time.

6. Who are your favorite artists - living and dead.
Edward Hopper, Andy Warhol, Turner, Monet, Georgia O'Keefe, Francis Livingston, Jeremy Mann,

7. Greatest advice given to you which you would like to pass along?
Be true to your heart, go with your gut feelings, and embrace change.

Thanks Rita for your interview and thank you again for being part of our Beautiful Nature exhibit! We hope everyone will pop in for a peek!

Long weekends

are perfect for dinner parties. We had a small one with daughter Chloe and I cooking up a "boef a la mode" from the French Chef cookbook. It was a hit and we even managed to make some desert from this past week's In the Kitchen With - very yummy!
These lovely flowers came to me from our guest Judith - she grew them all and arranged them so beautifully. What can I say except that I love flowers and the fact that she grew ALL of these was as amazing as the bouqet itself.
Onto a busy week with two new shows - and two new artists interviews here as well today - stay tuned!

Good bye to the Deep South and thanks ...

meryl truet photography

Well, we have been packing up and shipping - unpacking and hanging - for the past week and so my postings have been a little sparse to say the least! But it's summer still. The nip is in the early morning air, but enough warmth radiates by 9 to keep us on summer hours until after the long weekend. Stretch it out as long as you can - light one more fire for a BBQ and run to the beach if you dare sort of weather.
The Deep South exhibition was one of our most visited exhibits. The work was phenomenal and we are so grateful to Grace Bonney for curating this regional wonderment which invaded our Northeastern Gallery. Thank you Grace, Tim, Merryl,Haylie, Stephanie, Denise, Natalie, Emily, and Katie for making this summer a truly beautiful one!

Beautiful Nature :: one of TWO exhibits in September!

A little  sneak peek of our upcoming show (one of TWO!) in September. For all of you readers, it's ready to preview on the shop today!
These little beauties are each gems like paintings in two very different styles. Albina's gone graphic, and Rita's work is soft. Browse through the show at flickr if you want to see them more enlarged - each one is a knock out!

The fabulous toast server ...

Yes, I am a huge fan of the flohmarkt. .. the German version of our fleamarkets. It's a visual overload feast for the eyes with the bonus of exercise with the walking path being so very very long. If you were looking for antlers, they had them, mid century vases and ceramics - yup, lots of fabulous lamps and books, beads and baubles, antique posie books and papers, lots of bits and bobs and textiles from many different decades. I didn't even look at the furniture as it was impossible to think about sending it over, but there was plenty very cool items I would have loved to send stateside!
It was a glorious day last Saturday with extra sunshine, lots of little cooling breezes and a very patient and loving husband carrying all the finds along the way. We even found a replacement Villery and Boch teapot for my mother in law who had her beloved one broken recently! Yes, you can find it at the flohmarkt. Even if you are not looking.

currywurst and pommes rot/weiss

A fun little stop on one of our bike journeys in Germany. Curry Wurst and Pommes (french fries) rot/weiss (catsup and mayo) are not for the faint of heart. But yummy none the less.
We landed last night back in NH and enjoying the sunshine and trying to get our head around being back at work.
That's all the energy for now - but click through the photo if you would like to see more of our trip. I still have "one reel" ha ha ha left on my digi plus some great videos which will have to upload somewhere at some point.
Enjoy the summer-ness which is today!

In Baden-Baden

There is a wonderful friend named Angela. Her home reflects her beauty and her love all that is white and sparkly - (just like her personality!) Rainer and I spent two days at the famous spa at Baden-Baden getting treatments and experiencing the naked baths of the Friedrichsbad, 17 stations of hotsprings, saunas and steambaths combined with bubbling waters and cool pools set in antique tiled vaulted ceiling rooms and coming out feeling renewed.
It's not for everyone, but honestly it was the best thing I have ever done. Just letting the soul swing - die seele baumeln lassen. That was enough for me.
Angie has some fine affirmations dotted around her home - my favorite is of course "viva la hausfrau" ! Need I say more? Tschuss for now - the bikes await!

Party party

A tent went up for the birthday party of my father in law and the weather cooperated perfectly for the event yesterday here in the Muensterland! I love coming to visit our family here, enjoying life in the slower lane, helping my German language along and of course enjoying the yummy foods of the country. The catering service did a beautiful job with the food and Rainer and I made a lot of floral centerpieces for each of the tables with instruction from his mom. Something I have never tried, but had so much fun learning and all the flowers came straight from her garden!
Anyway, if you want to follow along with our travels, just click through to our flickr account. Happy weekending!

Summertime fun

A simple hello from the road. Wifi service on the way to the airport really has been great here to catch up from last week's time at Cape Cod. No posts, just sunny beaches.
We enjoyed a lovely party on Saturday night for my birthday. It was thrown by Mary-Jo who had pulled out all the stops for me ... Photos are of course on my camera at home. No bulky nikon on this trip. I am going for light and easy. The photos should still be forthcoming in normal fashion, just less quality!

And so, we are off now to Madrid and then to Dusseldorf for our time alone and with family. Stopping down to Baden-Baden for some spa time and more importantly a visit with Angela from omondieu! Will post photos at flckr as we go and try and keep up with some nice hot design and art spots from the road. Checking in here with those and highlights from shows at artstream and my own at Kimball Jenkins - Dreaming Seasons.

How are you going to spend the next weeks? I hope it is wonderful wherever you are!

Susan Schwake : : distance

distance, originally uploaded by artstreamstudios.

The work is as always a composite of places I've seen rendered into a place I have only visited within my head.

another one of my paintings for my upcoming show at Kimball Jenkins Estate
this one is one of three 12x12x1.5 inch canvases in this theme.
sort of a mix of our travels around Provence with an impression of lower Switzerland.

My new machine called Singer

my new machine, originally uploaded by artstreamstudios.

My old sewing machine broke last week. It finally bit the dust. With my birthday coming up and my daughter's quilt half finished, we found this beauty in perfect working condition complete with a lovely little cabinet available at a house two streets over from ours. Too funny and too good for my mom to pass up for my present. Hooray for birthdays! hooray for real heavy metal sewing machines!

My illustrations in ON magazine

I was so happy today when the ON magazine arrived in my mailbox. I had sent a group of tiny watercolors to them for use in this article and set of recipes by Carolyn Dille and wasn't sure how they would use them.
I like what they did and now can exhale. Today must have been the most perfect day of days in the summer here. Big blue skies, dry air and when arriving home poking around the basil patch of my garden I spied a hummingbird at rest on our tomato cages. How did your day go?

About last night ...

There is nothing finer in New England than a warm summer night under the stars. That is what Rainer and I enjoyed last night out in our garden. The fireflies were flying high and the stars were bright. It is very quiet where we live and quite dark. This year I bought a couple of solar powered LED lanterns made from a silky fabric mounted on traditional chinese lantern style wire forms. They have the tiniest little LED in them which cast a lovely glow that doesn't interfere with star gazing or firefly enjoyment. What was your weekend like?
