This and that

grace in france
Busy time here, so there I'll let the photos do the talking - Daughter Grace is graduating from college tomorrow. Yes, tomorrow! She will have earned herself a BA in English a BA in French and a minor in Creative writing. Yes we are proud of her. We have an opening during the day 10-4 tomorrow as well at artstream featuring the beautiful spring work of Emily Marie Cox called Spring is in the Air
!
Along side that we are hosting a group of comic book/illustrative artsits for Free Comic Book Day, supported by Jet Pack Comics- a way cool store across the street from us filled with amazing artists and fun loving people.
My book: Art Lab for Kids is finished and getting it's final touches before sending it off to my lovely publisher. Can't tell you how wonderful that is! Happy happy times here!
chloe with some of her fabulous porcelain earrings
Daughter Chloe has finished up her work for her AP art class and I had to show you one of her pieces here: the deer head which she made from plaster and paint is just incredible.
Among other things, I can't wait to have it up in our home somewhere! She's going to have a booth at the Strawberry Banke Sundays in Portsmouth this summer too - so look for her there!
Summer classes are starting to fill up at the studio too - so grab a spot now while you can still select something and get your art on!

See you next week!

Meet Emily Marie Cox: Spring is in the Air

Emily in her studio

1. Where do you live and does that influence your work at all?

Right now I am on the cusp of some major life changes and am playing the part of a gypsy as I get ready for those events. I just moved from Brooklyn and am currently working out the details of my next move. For the last few months, I have split my time between my childhood home in Wisconsin, visiting my fiance in Austin and revisiting my recent past back in NYC. When I was living in New York, I was very inspired by all the diverse characters walking down the street or sitting on the subway. Now that I spend most ofmy time in a rural environment, I relish in the quiet, natural beauty around me. It has been a pleasure to watch spring arrive this year.

2. We had some of your work before in our Deep South show - these pieces are quite different, yet quite related - can you tell us about the journey to the new work?

At the time of Deep South, I had just graduated from college with a degree in Fibers. My work at that time was very sculptural. Living in a small space in New York, I wasn't able to do as much 3-D work and my work began to transition into 2-D, a much more apartment friendly way to work. My work has forever been very figurative and illustrative. It keeps chasing me! In the past couple years, I have stopped denying it and let the drawings take over me.

2.b Tell us about what Spring means to you.

You will have to come to the show to find out!

3. What is a perfect day for you?

A day devoid of time.

4. Desert island scenerio: one art material to use, one dessert to eat , one band to listen to (over and over!) - which would they be?

6B graphite pencil. 70% Dark Chocolate. The Byrds.

5. Do you have a practice or ritual in making art?

I don't have a specific ritual but I make sure my mind is in a place it needs to be according to the kind of art I am creating. For this show, I created it at the end of winter so I could really feel what it was like to emerge into spring. I also listened to a lot of happy music and I wore the same outfit every time I went to work on it in the studio.

6. Have you stayed in touch with like thinking class mates from college - and have you collaborated?

The most valuable thing my education gave me was the people I met. We have all remained very close and often remind each other about how fortunate we are to have met such kindred spirits. I have collaborated with many of them. My most exciting collaboration is on the brink of unveiling. Stay tuned to pocketteloves.tumblr.com to learn more soon!

7. What is your one wish for your art?

I wish for my art to speak to many so I can forever continue to support myself with it.

Thank you so much Emily for this interview and a peek into your artful life!

The show opens Tuesday during regular gallery hours - but a formal opening will be held Saturday May 7th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All work will be available online on Tuesday May 2nd at our shop.

A busy week!

Rainer's painting of us in Koeln at the Dom for it takes two (2)
Hello! Oops! This week has slipped by without a post - not my normal mode, but so many exceptional things happened this week. First, there was a deadline. It was met and not with a crazed feeling, but more of a completed good feeling.
Then there were snowstorms.
And beautiful daughters winning gold keys for their artwork.
And painting or six to finish.
And classes to teach.
And photos to take. And artwork to encourage along ... and hanging of our new show - more peeks on that around noon

Oh April, how we have waited for you! Through the rains and pains of March we (not so quietly) waited. Boo hiss March -- yay! April. We are in the construction mode at the moment at the gallery. Repairs on the old girl (she's 106 now) are underway before our new exhibit opens next week: Fragmentary Blue by Lisa Congdon and new porcelain by Kim Westad. It's also my mother's birthday today so there is just so much to celebrate. Remember to go out and enjoy the sunshine, be happy and plant a flower. It's time!

Awards + receptions!

Last night I got a mail informing me that I was nominated for Outstanding Public Artist of the Year by the Spotlight awards people over at the Portsmouth Herald! What a nice surprise ... it's a people choice award which means you dear readers can vote for me, if you would like to. There is a nice little gala and ceremony along with a fun evening of artists gathering at the Music Hall in Portsmouth. So go ahead - vote for me right here! (unlike Pedro, I can not offer you protection)
Tomorrow at artstream, from 5-7 we have our artist reception for "Seasonal Travel" which should be a whole lot of fun! Drop by and peruse the works and have a drink on us ... meet Molly Bosley and let's chat about art. Have a wonderful weekend!

Wandering the Treeline :: sneak peek of Megan Bogonovich's new work

Megan came by yesterday with the first installment of her new sculptures. It's over the top again - amazingly detailed and yes, believe it or not, she has outdone herself again. It was a full moon drama drop off, but all in all our lovely afternoon was spent chatting and eating and photographing some of the most incredible scultpures I have seen from her yet! All will be in the shop and available for purchase on Saturday! Part three of this sneak peek? Tomorrow! IPS 2 -- back by popular demand!

Melanie Ford Wilson :: Dwellings

Melanie is simply one of the best illustrators I have ever met - her client list is long:Target, Loreal, Olay, Johnson & Johnson, Aveeno, the Four Seasons Restaurant, The Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology and the New York Restoration Project, among others. She is seriously cute to boot.
Her new work here at the gallery - on the canvas is exceptional too! She has mixed in some found papers, lush glossy layers of color and created some simply beautiful "dwellings" in which I could easily live. Here is a little peek into her world, above and below, two works which are part of our Dwellings show. You must come and see these in person - they are so deep and rich!

To Rome, To Roam

looking up to the front.... where are the sculptures?

by Tom Glover

Sarah Ahearn's lovely work

more Tom Glover

Liz Kollach's vibrant work...
Here are a few snapshots from the new exhibition at artstream: To Rome, To Roam featuring Tom Glover's new paintings and Megan Bogonovich's new sculptures. Tom has simply knocked himself out with beautiful renditions from abstracted views to colorful realistic streets in Rome as well as over 30 sepia watercolored sketch paintings of Rome. Megan's sculptures feature six brand new fresh from the studio works which evoke a sense of discovery or roaming (hence the theme, cough cough) within them. Come, see for yourself, at the opening of this fun exhibition and forget your cold New England worries of winter heating bills ... bask in the Roman sunshine and scramble up the mountain of shell like structures to find a little fantasy atop with us tomorrow night at the opening... 5-8 or so. Roam with us, if you will.

As if that were not enough, we also have two amazing women in the eQuinox gallery during this show - Sarah Ahearn Bellemere from Ithaca NY and Liz Kalloch from the San Fransico Bay area. Their mixed media works are as sunny as their own personalities - I met them both in person at Squam and was so pleased that they would appear in our gallery for this show. We have the full set of photos filling up at our flickr and by tomorrow night .. (or perhaps just a wee bit later) we will have the full show online in our shop for purchase. But for now, some shots of the installation in the gallery. More to come tomorrow too... and much earlier!

1000 posts and ... Rome, if you want to ...

partially done north window...tomorrow is another day...
1000 posts? I didn't even see it coming! How time does fly when you are having fun! Thank you all for your lovely feedback and support!

A new show up here at artstream, with loads of goodness from Tom Glover and Megan Bogonovich and Liz Kalloch and Sarah Ahearn.
Me? I have been: Workin'. Messing about. Dusting and pointing a lot. It's all good though as there is a real warmth of Roman sun glowing off the walls in here - a nice offset to the cold cold out-of-doors reality which winter has blown in this week.

Off to home now to recharge my batteries and sip some tea. Have a wonderful night/day in your part of the world! Tomorrow will bring loads of photos ... I am still sorting, messing about, working with them all.

p.s. don't forget to comment on the blogoversary post and win one of the three giveaways!
